Does Shopify Calculate Shipping?

6 mins

Shopify is a platform for businesses of all sizes to create an online store. Shopify offers users a customizable platform, an easy-to-use checkout process, and a wide range of features.

But do shipping calculations fall under those features?

Yes, Shopify does calculate shipping. In fact, it’s one of the features that make the platform so popular

It allows you to easily create shipping labels and track your packages from start to finish.

Plus, you can automate shipping rates based on package weight, destination, and other factors. This makes it easy to offer competitive rates and keep your customers happy.

Can Shopify Calculate Shipping Costs?

Yes, Shopify can calculate shipping costs.

To do so, you’ll need to set up your shipping rates in the Shipping settings of your Shopify admin.

You can either enter your shipping rates manually, or connect your Shopify account to a shipping carrier (such as UPS, FedEx, or USPS) and import your shipping rates automatically.

Once you’ve set up your shipping rates, Shopify will be able to calculate the cost of shipping for any orders placed through your store.

How Does Shopify Calculate Total Shipping Costs?

When you add a product to your Shopify store, you will need to set a weight for that product. This is so that Shopify can accurately calculate the shipping costs when a customer purchases that product.

Shopify uses something called ‘live carrier-calculated shipping’ in order to get accurate quotes from different shipping carriers (such as USPS, UPS, DHL, etc).

This means that when a customer goes to checkout, Shopify will send the total weight of their order to each of the relevant shipping carriers and they will return a quote based on their rates.

The advantage of this system is that it means you always have up-to-date shipping rates, as carrier prices can change frequently.

The downside is that it can sometimes take a little longer for the quotes to come back from the carriers (although this is usually only a few seconds).

Once Shopify has the quotes from all of the relevant carriers, it will then add on any additional fees that you have set (such as handling fees) and display the final shipping cost to the customer at checkout.

How To Calculate Shiping In Shopify?

There are two ways to calculate shipping in Shopify: manually or using a shipping app.

If you’re just starting out, or if you have a small number of products, you can probably get away with calculating shipping manually

For larger businesses, or for businesses that ship a lot of products, we recommend using a shipping app

Shipping apps automate the process of calculating shipping rates, and they often offer other features like label printing and tracking.

Manual Calculations

To calculate shipping manually, you’ll need to know the dimensions and weight of your product, as well as the shipping destination

With this information, you can look up the shipping rates for different carriers and choose the one that best meets your needs.

Once you’ve selected a carrier, you can enter the details into Shopify and start calculating shipping for your orders.

If you decide to use a shipping app, the process is even easier. Most shipping apps will automatically calculate shipping rates based on the product dimensions and weight, as well as the destination.

All you need to do is select the carrier and service level that you want, and the app will take care of the rest

Shipping apps also typically offer other features like label printing and tracking, which can save you time and money.

Whether you decide to calculate shipping manually or use a shipping app, Shopify makes it easy to get your products to your customers quickly and efficiently.

With a few clicks of the mouse, you can have accurate shipping rates for your orders, making it easier than ever to run your ecommerce business.

Carrier-Calculated Shipping Shopify

If you’re using Shopify to sell products online, you may be wondering about carrier-calculated shipping.

This type of shipping allows Shopify to calculate the rates for shipping your orders based on the weight and dimensions of your products, as well as the delivery location.

It’s a great option if you want to provide accurate shipping costs to your customers at checkout.

In order to use carrier-calculated shipping, you’ll need to set up some basic information in your Shopify account.

First, you’ll need to enter the weights and dimensions of your products.

Next, you’ll need to set up shipping zones and rates.

Once that’s done, carrier-calculated shipping will be enabled for your store, and will start calculating rates at checkout.

One thing to keep in mind is that carrier-calculated shipping is only available for certain countries.

Currently, it’s available in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and select European countries.

So if you’re selling internationally, you may want to consider another option for calculating shipping costs.

Overall, carrier-calculated shipping is a great option if you want to provide accurate shipping costs to your customers at checkout. It’s easy to set up and can save you a lot of time when fulfilling orders.

How to Set Up Shipping Rates on Shopify?

If you’re running a Shopify store, you’ll need to set up shipping rates at some point. Fortunately, Shopify makes it easy to do this.

Here’s how to do it:

First, log in to your Shopify admin and go to Settings > Shipping. Here, you’ll see all of the shipping options that are available to you. For each shipping option, there will be a section for setting up the rates.

The first thing you need to do is decide which countries you want to ship to. You can either select specific countries or choose “All other countries.”

Once you’ve made your selection, enter the shipping rate for each country in the appropriate field.

Keep in mind that these rates are per-item rates. So if you’re selling a product that costs $10 and your shipping rate is $5, the customer will be charged $15 for shipping.

Next, decide how you want your products to be shipped. The most common options are “Flat rate” and “Free shipping.”

A flat rate means that every order will be charged the same amount for shipping, regardless of how many items are purchased.

Free shipping means that customers will not be charged for shipping unless they purchase certain items or meet a minimum order total (which you can set).

Once you’ve decided on your Shipping Options and entered the appropriate Shipping Rates, click save and your changes will be saved!

Shopify Ups Shipping Rates

As of March 1st, Shopify has increased its shipping rates for all US orders. The new rates are as follows:

  • First Class (0-13 oz): $3.95
  • Priority Mail (14-28 oz): $7.50
  • Express Mail (1-2 lbs): $22.95
  • Oversized / Heavyweight (over 2 lbs): $39.95+

These changes come as a result of the recent USPS rate increase that went into effect on January 22nd. All other shipping carriers have also increased their rates, so Shopify has had to adjust accordingly.

While we understand that this may be an inconvenience for some of our customers. We hope that you understand that these increases are out of our control and necessary in order to continue providing reliable shipping services.

Final Thoughts

While it is important to use shipping software to automate your eCommerce business fulfillment.
